The traditional concern for the welfare of the working class has been kept on by the Legislative Assemblies constituted since 1957. Special care has been taken to respect the rights of all sections of the working population, resulting in welfare measures for specific occupational groups of labourers and to provide for safe and healthy working conditions. The Kerala Agricultural Workers Act, 1974 guaranteeing security of employment, sound working conditions and proper grievance redressal mechanism and constituting the Provident Fund was the most important among the earliest legislation aiming at labour welfare. A similar legislation protecting the interests of the headload workers was made in the Kerala Headload Workers Act, 1978.
Provisions regarding the constitution of labour welfare fund could be found in The Kerala Toddy Worker’s Welfare Fund Act, 1968 and The Kerala Labour Welfare Fund Act, 1975. Similar legislations enacted comprise The Kerala Motor Transport Worker's Welfare Fund Act, 1985, The Kerala Fishermen's Welfare Fund Act, 1985, The Kerala Coir Workers' Welfare Fund Act, 1987, The Kerala Khadi Workers' Welfare Fund Act,1989, The Kerala Handloom Worker's Welfare Fund Act,1989, The Kerala Abkari Worker’s Welfare Fund Act,1989, The Kerala Construction Worker’s Welfare Fund Act,1989, The Keral Tailoring Worker’s Welfare Fund Act,1994 and The Kerala Beedi and Cigar Worker’s Welfare Fund Act,1995.
The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed 4 Bills safeguarding the interests of cashew workers namely The Unregistered Cashewnut Factories Prohibition Bill,1967, The Kerala Cashew Factories Acquisition Bill,1974, The Kerala Cashew Workers Relief and Welfare Fund Bill,1979 and The Kerala Raw Cashewnuts(Procurement and Distribution) Bill, 1981.
The Kerala Industrial Establishment (National and Festival Holidays) Act, 1958, and The Kerala Industrial Employees Payment of Gratuity Act,1970 were aimed at the welfare of employees of Industrial Establishments.
In order to make clear the procedure for acquisition of private undertakings by the Government there have been legislations like The Super Clays and Minerals Mining Company(Pvt) Ltd(Acquisition of Undertakings) Act,1984 and The Kerala Sick Textile Undertaking(Acquistion and Transfer of Undertakings) Act, 1985.
