Son of Shri. K.
Karunakaran, former Chief Minister and Smt.
Kalyanikkutty Amma; born at Thrissur on 14th
May 1957; B.A., LL.B (course completed);
Political Worker.
During college days,
he took very active and lively interest in
students’ movements.
However, he started his political career
as the Chairman of the Kozhikode District
Sevadal Board of Indian National Congress, and
then became its State Chairman.
Elected to the Parliament from Kozhikode
in 1989, 1991 and 1999.
Was General Secretary, Vice-President and
President of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee;
and Minister for Electricity of the State for a
period of three months from February 2004.
Formed Democratic
Indira Congress under the leadership of Shri. K.
Karunakaran in 2005 and became its President.
Later, the Party merged with N.C.P. and
then became the President of the State Committee
of N.C.P. Returned
to I.N.C. in 2011 and now holds the
Presidentship of many trade unions.
